Last year, after being hired to compose a feature film, I went on a search to find interesting instruments and sounds that would lay the foundation of the themes and motifs that I would end up using for this movie. Kody Newton, the Director of the film "2:59" said he wanted it to "feel like a John Williams type score." It is a fantasy, youthful horror movie. There were lots of musical opportunities.
I said, "I'm not John Williams, but I will certainly do my best impersonation." Of course, it ended up sounding like a cross between all of my favorite composer, including John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, and a hint of Danny Elfman. And while I did everything possible to achieve the big 80's blockbuster sound (on a slightly reduced budget, and all digital... LOL), I also wanted to make it my own. Throughout the film, you can hear elements of what became our first Kontakt product "Shadow Forest." But what I really wanted was a Native American Flute. I just could not find what I was looking for.
Recently, while visiting my mother, I noticed, sitting on her shelf... a Native American Flute. So, I stole it. While the score for the movie is all but complete, sans the flute, I couldn't get it out of my head that I struggled to find the sound I was looking for. So, I made it myself. This drive is part of what led to creating this company.
The flute will feature over 230 recorded samples, multiple articulations and special effects. I have also programmed it to cycle through four round robins each time you strike the key for a more realistic feeling. The staccato patches can be played with velocity dynamics, while the longer notes and vibratos are set up to perform as legato.
Once you add a little reverb, delay, and attack, the magic begins.
Stonegate's Native Flute will be out soon, and I hope that you are able to find a place for it in your next project.
